How do you encourage a growth mindset, specifically in math? 💭

I’m currently ✨obsessed✨ with Jo Boaler’s Mathematical Mindsets, so we’re really focusing on OUR math mindsets.

Even though I primarily teach students who are identified as gifted, they face their own very unique struggles— some still lack a growth mindset about math and some have rarely faced true challenge in math.

These two books are some of my favorites for starting open conversations about our math mindsets, and I think they’re staples for just about every classroom with mathematicians (P.S. That is every classroom.)!

Okay, I can’t be the only one who has a not-so-s

So, is it weird to admit that I have a favorite ma

So, is it weird to admit that I have a favorite math fact? 😍 🤷🏼‍♀️ Six times six equals thirty-six. It just glides off the tongue, doesn’t it?! 💥 So tell me... do YOU a have a favorite fact, or am I alone here? 😂

I have always told my students about how much I love this math fact, and they always giggle at me at first because WHO HAS A FAVORITE MATH FACT? But then after a while, THEY would come to me and start telling me their favorite facts. So naturally, I turned it into a math fact practice game (adapted from a popular one!) where each student told me their favorite fact, we put it on a sticker, and walked around finding the product of each person’s favorite fact. It was goofy and silly, but they loved it and always wore their stickers all day long. 😂

My 9 year old took the first picture, and my 4 year old took the second one. They both looked at their final products with pure joy, exclaiming what beautiful pictures they had captured. I looked at the pictures and took a moment to see myself through their eyes, and my perspective always shifts.

This is a really hard season for so many teachers (and parents, too), and I won’t sugarcoat that, but I hope you all can take a moment to see some of the good that your students see on a daily basis. The little moments that add up to make a big difference. The lightbulb moments that you might not even notice. The moment of encouragement you offered that turned a child’s day around. It’s all there, and it all adds up. ❤️
