Math Flip Books: An Engaging Way to Teach Key Math Skills

It’s no secret that I love using math anchor charts to introduce new concepts and hold our learning throughout each unit. They also serve as valuable reference charts throughout the year, but it can be difficult to find space to display them all at the same time. That’s why I also started using FREE quick reference guides and interactive notebook pages so all students have important reference materials right at their fingertips in their math folders.

Last year, I also started using math flip books as an alternative to interactive notebooks. The fun flip book format is engaging, a little faster (and less messy without the glue!), and the perfect size to tuck into math folders for future reference. PLUS they come in different versions to make differentiation even easier. Here’s a closer look at exactly how I use them with my students.

Math flip books are mini anchor charts, reference books, and practice activities as great alternatives to interactive notebooks.

How to Use Math Flip Books

Instead of having students copy or glue the anchor chart into their notebooks, the flip book acts as its own mini interactive notebook. The left hand side of each page is used for teaching and acts as a mini anchor chart that students interact with and complete to focus on learning the topic.

On the right hand side, students practice and apply the new concept in multiple ways.

In the final ‘Put it All Together’ section, students synthesize all skills in an engaging review of everything they have learned throughout the flipbook.

Overall, the flip book is a fun, new format that mixes things up and keeps students engaged instead of always doing things the same way!

More Flip Book Formats

Each math flipbook resource comes in three versions so you can choose the one that works best for your class or individual students.

Option one is my favorite, though!! This is the standard flip book with tabs that you print double-sided and cut tabs for quickly finding each section. I love to have my parent volunteers help assemble them!

Option two is a full page sheet without tabs so you can just print and go when you’re in a hurry.

Finally, the third version is digital on Google Slides in full color. These are perfect if you have easy access to devices.

Each math flip book is also available in a digital format.

Using Math Flip Books for Differentiation

These math flip books have been designed to cover 18 upper elementary math skills for 3rd-5th grades. Even better?? Many are differentiated and include multiple flipbook versions to meet the wide variety of needs in your class.

Here’s an example of how you can differentiate using set nine, fraction skills. This set includes an Introductory Fraction Skills flip book that is perfect for 3rd grade review and Advanced Fraction Skills flip book for 4th and 5th grades.

The Introductory Fraction Skills flip book includes seven pages that cover basic fractions, fractions on a number line, and equivalent fractions.

The Advanced Fraction Skills flip book includes thirteen pages that cover decomposing fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, simplest form, denominators of 10 & 100, and fractions & decimals.

With some classes, you might need to use both flip books to differentiate your small groups during math workshop. This way all students are working on fraction skills, but at their own unique levels.
