Description

Using picture books provides an authentic, fun way for students to engage with essential reading skills. We’ve designed this series of inference lessons to help you bring picture books into your classroom in a low-prep, high-engagement format.

This resource has activities for two different books. Both books have similar plot points and themes for students to compare and contrast. Stormy by Guojing is a wordless picture book. Small in the City by Sydney Smith contains some words and wordless illustrated pages. Students will infer the plot through the illustrations in each book.

We cannot wait for your students to reach their peak when learning and applying their inferencing skills in these activities!

Why use picture books to teach reading skills? Picture books bring reading skills to life! Picture books are short but beautiful authentic texts that help students see reading skills from different perspectives. We can use picture books to explicitly teach these important skills. Picture books have concrete stories and characters to reference as they continue to think about these skills. As a bonus, picture books are highly engaging for students!

This picture book companion lesson is the perfect accompaniment to our Inferencing Reading Lesson!
