Description

Teach and review five common parts of speech using pictures AND teach students how to apply their skills to short reading passages! With these 16 digital and printable pages, students will have the opportunity to observe a picture and make inferences, ask questions, make predictions, etc., practice a wide variety of parts of speech skills based on the picture, and apply the part of speech to a short passage.

There are a total of 16 printable pages (3 for each skill plus one for nouns AND verbs) covering the following skills:

  • Nouns
  • Verbs
  • Adjectives
  • Adverbs
  • Prepositions

Digital Version is Included! There are now TWO options for digital access. The original version that is identical to the printable pages is still included, but this resource now includes a brand new interactive, easy to read and navigate Google Slides version!

**This resource is the perfect companion to my best-selling resource Using Pictures to Teach Reading Skills! **

There are three components to EACH page of this resource:

Observe It: This section includes the picture with plenty of white space around it. The white space is for students to make literal AND inferential observations. Take as many notes as you can, encourage students to stretch their thinking, and watch their inference skills grow with EVERY picture you observe! Examples of observations are on the following page. ALWAYS COMPLETE THIS SECTION FIRST! If possible, fold the bottom section under so that students do nothing but observe here. They will be pleasantly surprised to find that they can use their observations to complete the “Answer It” section.

**I have added a component to this section that encourages students to use the specific part of speech when making their inferences and observations. Continue to hone those inference skills while still practice their parts of speech!

Answer It: This section has a task to complete that focuses on a specific part of speech AND relates to the picture in the “observe it” section.

Apply It or Write It: This section has a short story that loosely relates to the same topic shown in the picture and includes a task that relates to a specific part of speech focus.

The images print well in color OR black and white. If you print in black and white, I do encourage you to project or show a color image for students so that they can make even more observations.

I have included an answer key, but PLEASE NOTE: students should be encouraged to come up with their own original answers. Since many of the tasks are open ended, there are many, many justifiable answers. These tasks are meant to encourage kids to think outside the box! You will be amazed at what they come up with.

Also includes a cover page to make this into a practice booklet, a “quick reference page” that quickly reviews each of the parts of speech covered in the printables, additional resource links to my SEVEN blog posts about using pictures to teach reading skills, and observation/page samples.

I strongly suggest working through a few of these pages as a whole group before allowing students to work independently on them– particularly the “OBSERVE” section.

These printables are perfect for whole group or small group instruction, morning work, literacy centers, and more!

Ideal for Grades 3+ and Enrichment or Whole-Class 2nd grade
