Why Study Word Morphology?

According to Science of Reading research, explicit instruction in word structure—roots, prefixes, and suffixes—is a critical bridge between phonics and vocabulary development. More than half of English words come from Greek or Latin roots, and as students progress into upper elementary and content-area texts, those roots appear in up to 75% of the vocabulary they encounter. When students learn just one root, they gain the tools to decode and understand dozens of new words.

Teaching morphology (the study of word parts) helps students make meaning from complex vocabulary, strengthens reading comprehension, and supports spelling and writing.
